A: I knew someone would ask. There’s no rational explanation, it’s just what he wrote. He said, “What’s the date today?” and before I could answer, he wrote, “Nov. 26.” That’s it!

Terence Koh x Converse

I’m sure I make this clear at least once every month– but shoes really get me off. By no means do I consider myself aligned with the traditional idea of a sneaker head, but footwear has always had a strange effect over me. So, not unsurprisingly, this morning I found this really fantastic, and quite unexpected collab that has really got me buzzing. I would love to see the art direction behind the creation of this rather unique Chuck Taylor. Other collaborators seem to spend so much time almost designing, effectively choosing color-ways and styling– this however, literally breaks the mold. Even if its only by a little.

For those who don’t know, Koh best known as a performance artist, though is by no means limited to do that title. He works in a number of mediums, and his work is typically derived from “queer,” or “punk” subcultures. His contributions have made him a pivotal figure in today’s New York Downtown art scene, and is most certainly a gay icon as well.

The Portland-based chainlet recently announced it has struck a deal with Butt magazine, the pink-papered gay quarterly, to curate 16 homoerotic films for the video-on-demand service at its New York and Palm Springs, Calif., properties. Selected by the Butt staff writer Adam Baran, the video selections will include a range of rare and historic adult movies — some in 3-D! — that are in keeping with the magazine’s mission: to make titillation a cultural experience.

Seeing these photos hits pretty close to home having grown up in Portland– whereas grunge scene’s epicenter remained in Seattle (its now in the form of a smolder, this is a city whose incredible explosion of culture and equal loss of the same genuinely leaves you with a ‘has been’ impression), it was certainly shared with the rest of NW. Courtney Love did go to my middle school, afterall.

Old School Jams, Vol. 3

Around 13 or 14 years old, I got really into gangster rap in all of its aspects. It was a real west coast vibe, and in addition to listening to The Chronic and Doggystyle on repeat I would do things like watch Boyz In The Hood &Menace II Society. However, on a little stranger angle– I became absolutely obsessed with Lowrider culture, and ever had a subscription to the magazine who keeps that namesake.

A page devote to advertising compilations of records called “Old School,” would appear in every issue– and while my fascination with lowriders has subsided, I realize that one of the only parts of this whole ramble I gave little to no attention to, and yet have always remembered, were these little budget ads. I just looked them up, and wow! These comps are amazing! Sure, its 90% general knowledge, but there is a little left-field selection and unknown remix action in there too.

This is an amazing book… a look at one of the more humorous and most certainly strange sides of the culture of the United States Armed Forces. A recent acquaintance* picked it up from The New Museum’s excellently curated giftshop following a visit to the recent Emory Douglas: Black Panther show. I’ve been kicking myself for missing that.

Gucci apparently opened up a pop-up store last night, had a red carpet event followed by an after party. This type of shit can be highly entertaining, even if its out of your scope.
